November 2023

I have not updated this blog since 2017. In fact, I forgot about this until Google reminded me that it will soon be deactivated. Since 2017, a lot has changed. My grandma has passed away, and I have obtained my PhD. I am in a postdoc position that will be over as well.

I can not believe that I have lived in HK for almost 17 years.  Time flies. I plan to return to the US next year, so I do not know what other adventures await me.

Traveling

This is one of the tallest building in Hong Kong. I have no idea what the height is but compared to other buildings surrounding it you can tell it's tall! I think it's about four years old because the last time I was in Hong Kong the building was still in construction.

Temperture Raising!

It is freaky hot here. The past two days the temperture has raised to 34C. The good thing is that I get to swim everyday. There's abs. no air you can breath in if you walk through the city during the middle of the day. I seriously think I can get a stroke or something if I don't bring an umberlla with me.

Speaking different chinese under one roof

I am temperoary living in my grandparent's house. For those who does not know, there are more than 150 types of chinese that people speak in China. (I am very disppointed at you if you think we only have two types of chinese!) Anyway, both of my grandparents can speak two or three different types of chinese and they are trying to make me speak them as well. Most of them are very similar to cantonese but I keep mixing them up when I tried to talk.

acupunture

Two weeks ago I had acupunture (spelling? Sorry I don't have my dictionary with me) for the first time. It was weird because the electric current was running around my body. It was very difficult to describe but it made my body very relaxing afterward. I am not sure if I want the same experience ever happen to me again, but I am glad I tried it at least once in my life.

What have I been doing so far?

This is a picture I took at 5am.

For the past few days I have been doing nothing but rock climbing. Every morning I wake up around 5 to 5:30am and rock climbing with my grandparent. It usually takes 30 minutes to get up there and another 30 minutes to come down. It's amazing because you get to see most part of Hong Kong once you reach the top of the mountain. I took some pictures but I have no time to upload them yet. Once I have time, I will upload them to my facebook album or else.

In Hong Kong

It's almost a week since my departure. I safely arrived Hong Kong on June 1 at 11PM. It was a long 24 hours flight.
The weather here is getting much better since it has been raining for almost a week. It's very hot and humid here. It usually takes two to three hours for my hair to dry naturally. Since the place I am staying has no internet connection, I probably will not get online as often as I wanted. I will try my best to read email if you send one! The best way to reach me is by email: oi.ling.yu@gmail.com keep in touch, guys!

Last day before departure

Yes! Today is the last day before I am moving back to my own country, Hong Kong. It's funny how I am going to miss the U.S, despite the fact that I have been looking forward to this day since early this year. Although I was rarely in CT for the past few years, I think I am going to miss Ct more than Allegheny. For one thing, I am going to miss my parent since I am leaving them again for new adventures. Second, I am going to miss my huge room and electronics that do not accept 240V current (FYI: U.S uses AC 110V and Hong Kong (like many countries) uses AC 240V). I am going to miss books that are too heavy to come with me (AKA: all my chemistry textbooks, history books, and math books, etc..) I am going to miss measuring units according to the American standard. It's going to be hell for me to talk about temperture in unit C and does not really know what that mean until I convert it back to unit F. Now imagine describing your height or weight in cm or kg. Based on previous experiences, people are going to ask my height and expect me to tell them in cm unit. In fact, I am going to miss fresh air and drive in streets with no traffic. There are a lot of things I am going to miss, but I am certain that I am not going to miss any chinese resturants in here and the cold weathers or shall I say "NO SNOW"! :-D
There are a lot of stuff I am not going to miss, but for now I can't think of any and I am still busy packing. If I can come up with any, I will make a list. For now, wish me a safe trip to Hong Kong. My fellow friends, let's keep in touch. For those who wanted a post card from me, I will try my best to send one as soon I reached Hong Kong.
